When Eau Sauvage launched in 1966, it was the first mainstream fragrance to use hedione in significant quantity — a then-experimental molecule that gave citrus notes an airy, radiant quality nobody had smelled before, and effectively invented modern men's perfumery in the process. Lemon, bergamot, basil, rosemary and petitgrain open sharp and green, before jasmine, coriander, carnation, orris root and patchouli build an aromatic, structured heart. Oakmoss, vetiver, musk and amber settle into a classic, dry chypre base. Nearly sixty years on, it's still the reference point the genre is measured against.

How to use
